What Is Product Discovery?

Product discovery is the work of deciding what to build by learning from real customers before committing engineering time.

Definition

Product discovery is the process of figuring out what is worth building, and what is not, by learning from real customers before you write code. It answers two questions: are we solving a real problem, and are we solving it in a way people will actually adopt?

Why it matters

Most products fail not because they were built badly but because they were built at all. Nobody needed them. Discovery is the cheapest insurance against that outcome. A week of conversations can save a quarter of engineering aimed at the wrong target.

Discovery vs. delivery

Delivery is building the thing right; discovery is choosing the right thing to build. Strong teams run both continuously: discovery keeps the roadmap pointed at real needs while delivery ships against it.
